Rijnstate Elst Hospital
Leading the Way in Eco-Friendly Construction Initiatives
The involvement of Hager Group in the development of Rijnstate Elst Hospital in the Netherlands exemplifies its expertise in sustainable energy solutions. This hospital, the first to be entirely powered by renewable energy, sets a new standard for eco-friendly construction. More than just a supplier, Hager acted as a trusted partner, engaging in every stage of the project, from feasibility studies to final implementation.
Beyond being a modern medical facility, this project stands as a landmark achievement in ecological transformation. The building incorporates an advanced energy system that combines transformers, backup power supplies, solar panels, and hydrogen storage, significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Collaborating from the earliest stage of the project: the key to success
A crucial factor in Hager’s successful intervention was its early involvement in the project. By collaborating with Unica from the outset, we were able to design and propose tailored solutions. Ed Kooijmans, account manager at Hager, emphasizes: “Being present from the beginning makes all the difference. It is vital for us to understand our clients’ needs during the design phase. By combining our expertise, we could brainstorm together to deliver concrete and customized solutions. It’s the blend of our technical skills and customer focus that allows us to speak the same language as our clients, meeting their requests precisely while building a strong relationship from the start!”
The use of a digital twin of the building was also critical in ensuring accuracy and minimizing disruptions. Martwin de Man, project manager, explains: “All technical aspects related to the architecture and installation were studied and verified in meticulous detail. Consequently, disruptions on-site were minimal. All rail ducts are installed to the millimeter!”

A Partnership Built on Strong Relationships
Hager’s role extended beyond simply providing equipment. Frank Vierdag, project manager at Unica, states: “Rijnstate Elst is an excellent example of teamwork, where Hager was not just a supplier but a true project partner, from design through to execution.” This fruitful collaboration has paved the way for new projects: not far from the hospital, Unica Building Projects Zuid is developing a new laboratory, and Hager has been chosen as the trusted partner to supply the distribution systems.
The Rijnstate Elst Hospital project highlights Hager Group’s commitment to innovating in sustainable energy management through robust partnerships and solid technical expertise.
